About me

Hello and welcome to Clement Counselling & Psychotherapy. My name is Tara Jane O'Connor and I am a native of Co. Clare. I am the sole proprietor of  my business Clement Counselling & Psychotherapy therapy practice. I am a professionally qualified and experienced accredited counsellor and psychotherapist practising in both Ennis and Kilrush towns. My accrediting body is the Irish Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (IACP). As a therapist, I am also Garda vetted with the IACP.

I mainly provide face-to-face and online counselling and psychotherapy services for teenagers, students and adults in need of help and support.

Prior to starting out my journey as a counsellor / psychotherapist I was fortunate to travel and see many countries and experience their cultures in my past life in aviation which has been and still is of great benefit to me in working with my clients.

Previously I was a student counsellor with Mary Immaculate College supporting and encountering students from the age of 18 through to mature students with a wide range of presenting issue. I also volunteered as a parent and youth mentor for Le Chéile Mentoring which is a national, volunteer mentoring and family support service, which works with young people and their families, where the young person is involved in or at risk of offending. As a mentor, my ability to be able to reach out and connect with my mentees was of fundamental importance to my role at Le Chéile.

I am truly passionate about the work I do and especially in creating a safe supportive therapeutic environment for my clients, so that they can explore what's happening for them in their lives. Regularly I attend and participate in continual professional development (CPD) and supervision to support me in my work with different client presentations.

I have a keen interest in attachment theory and on the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and toxic stress in adulthood.

My Therapeutic Style  of Counselling

My therapeutic style of counselling is a person-centred integrative approach in which I strive to create a safe, warm therapeutic space in therapy by providing my clients with a compassionate, empathic non-judgemental attitude.

I believe I possess the qualities of genuineness, compassion, respect, and an indomitable spirit. By fostering a safer therapeutic space with my clients, I believe that I have the potential to create a climate that allows the client to feel more empowered and trusting of the relationship allowing for a more effective therapeutic relationship and positive change.

I value and hold in high regard the underlying principles of Carl Rogers's core conditions. Fundamentally, I try my utmost to provide them to my clients in session and to create a safe climate in the moment to moment experience that allows my client to feel valued, respected, safe, unjudged and listened to during their personal distress which builds their trust and self-esteem to open up about their issues.

By fostering and facilitating a safer therapeutic space with my clients, I believe that I have the potential to create a climate that allows my client to feel more empowered and trusting of the relationship allowing for a more effective therapeutic relationship and positive change.

Depending on my client's needs and presenting issues I tend to draw from different therapy modalities such as person-centred, psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), existential, transactional analysis, solution focused, neuroscience, polyvagal theory, Bronfenbrenner - the ecological model and mindfulness based cognitive therapy and psychoeducation to name but a few. This enables a much more flexible and individualised approach to therapy, and this allows the therapy to be more responsive to my client's diverse needs.
